EV PHEV Drivers: We want to be flexible to your needs and your time, so you can arrive as early as 7:30 am (but I will put you to work helping with set up) or as late as 2:45 and stay as late as you want. The show times are officially from 10am – 4pm. Elgin Road is close to us from 10:15 am to 11:30 am to allow the parade to exit Fisher Ave. After that, it is closed to the public and will be used by us for Ride and Drives.

Non-Electric Vehicle Visitors: We will be working to secure parking at Poolesville High School

Parking Conditions: We will watch and report on any issues as we get close to the event!

National Drive Electric Week Poolesville Day Event 2018 Driver and Vendor Information

It’s almost here!  Thank you all for registering (You haven’t?, Please do now: National Drive Electric Week Poolesville)!

So here are the answers to the Who, What, Where, When, and How:

Weather (as of 9am Sept 12): Weare a go for our National Drive Electric Week (#NDEW2018) Poolesville Day Event. Little impact is expected from Hurricane Florence for Saturday.  Rain expected on Friday, but only a small chance of a passing shower on Saturday. Saturday will be mostly cloudy, humid, in the 70s with a small chance of rain.

Update -12:30 pm Sept 12: Weather forecast keeps improving!

Drivers: We want to be flexible to your needs and your time, so you can arrive as early as 7:30 am (but I will put you to work helping with set up) or as late as 2:45 and stay as late as you want. The show times are officially from 10am – 4pm. Elgin Road is close to us from 10:15 am to 11:30 am to allow the parade to exit Fisher Ave. After that, it is closed to the public and will be used by us for Ride and Drives.

Parking: The parking field is in good shape, with no standing water. The grass is cut. The grass will be wet and slick, so drive slow, drive careful. Wet grass, feet may get wet, wear appropriate footwear and/or bring extra socks. If you are staying for only an hour or so, please park on the Anytime Parking lot if space is available. We are asking Tesla owners to enter into the fields behind Bassett’s from W Willard. If you have a non-Tesla, enter from Elgin Road at Wooten Ave. in to the Anytime parking lot.  Tesla Drivers: If the conditions are to bad or you do not feel comfortable parking on the field, follow the directions for the non-Tesla drivers (above).
I don’t want to park in the grass!: If the parking lot is full and you fear getting your car stuck in the grass (or you just want to protect the grass), you can also park at the Poolesville High School Parking Lot (on Wooton Ave, between W Willard and Elgin). Note: this is outside the event area, but in easy walking to the event.

The National Drive Electric Week Poolesville Day Event is on the far left. The green lines depict way to enter the event and to bypass the closed roads (road blocks in Red). A closer up view of our event area is shown below.

Directions from Virginia: If you come from the Leesburg area, you can drive up Rt 15 to Whites Ferry (if it is not closed, as of Sept 13 it was closed, but Historic White’s Ferry says “We Expect to be open tomorrow”(Sept 14), get updates at https://www.facebook.com/pg/WhitesFerry/posts/, PS: This morning (Sept 14) it was still closed), exit the Ferry on Whites Ferry Road and drive to Poolesville. Warning: Watch for the Speed Camera before reaching Poolesville! Turn right on W Willard Road (see map above).  If the Ferry is closed (check Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pg/WhitesFerry/posts/): This adds about 35 minutes and 25 miles – continue on 15 across the bridge to Maryland. Turn right on to Rt 28 follow that, ends on Rt 85 (Rt 28), turn right onto Rt 28 and follow directions from Frederick (below).

Directions from Frederick: Drive down Rt 85 (turns into Rt 28), Warning: Watch for the Speed Camera, comes up fast, turn right on Rt 109, cross Rt 107 (Fisher Ave) to Elgin Rd.

Directions from Gaithersburg, Rockville, Washington DC and points east and south: Drive north on Rt 28, take the fork left onto Rt 107 (Whites Ferry). Follow that to the roadblock (Warning: Watch for the Speed Camera just before Poolesville). Turn left on Wooton Ave and right on Elgin Rd or continue to W Willard Rd and turn right, then right into the field.

Giving Ride and Drives: Some of you may want to provide rides to the public or allow the public to drive your cars. We think this is a great way for the public to understand why we are all so excited about electric vehicles. We will have special parking for you on the lot between the tent areas. Dealerships and Manufacturers can move and park their cars on Elgin Rd, once the parade ends around 11:15 am (but not until then!). Please note: giving rides or drives is totally up to you, we do not provide insurance. It is your responsibility to ensure that all drivers are licenced and are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The easiest route is “around the block”. Drive down Elgin, right on Wooton, right on W Willard, right on Fisher, right back on to Elgin.

Check In: Everyone must check in at the “Check In” Tent when they arrive, even if you have pre-registered (If you have not, please do: https://poolesville.green/NDEW. We will ask for your email (for next year’s event) and you will get a “Swag Bag”, an event T-Shirt and raffle tickets. If you have not claimed your shirt by 3pm, we may no longer have it or at least one in your requested size.

Vendors, VIP Visitors, Media, Manufacturers and Dealerships:

Non-EV Parking: We have a limited number of easy access parking spots for non-electric vehicles. Please contact me on how many spots you will need and for what time periods. Trucks and additional Non-EV parking will be available at the High School (at the end of Elgin Rd, across Wootton Ave).
Setup: You can set up as early as Friday evening, but there will be no overnight security. Staff will be on site by 7:30 am and able to direct where to go. The first cars are expected by 9:30 am and the event begins at 10 am.
Access: You can unload cars and trucks on the site up to 9:45 am. No non-EV access will be granted after 10 am.
Breakdown: The event officially ends at 4 pm. Staff will be on hand and will let you know if breakdown can be done earlier.

What is Expected of You: Please be polite at all times! There are many in our area that disagree with the EVolution, inform, but please do not argue with them. You can always let them know the Classic Car show is at the other end of town. Any problems please refer to our volunteers and staff. There is a lot to see and enjoy in Poolesville.

What Should I Bring?: Bring yourself, bring your friends. If you bring pets, they must be well behaved with people and other pets, must be on leashes and you have to clean up after them. Bring rain gear, boots, a change of clothes maybe, shoes. You can bring chairs, coolers, snacks, if you like. Dare I say, Sunblock!  Do NOT bring alcohol (although there are 3 bars in town and a nearby outside bar tent, but you cannot take drinks outside those areas). Do not bring firearms or lethal weapons of any kind (in other words us common sense).

Free Raffle Drawings: There will be two drawings. an open to the general public (and you all) at 2:30 pm and a registered drivers only at 3:30 pm. You will not need to be present to win any of the major prizes, but if you win and you are not there , you may need to come by Poolesville at an arranged date and time to pick it up or pay for shipping (or you can donate your prize back to Poolesville Green).

Other Activities: Poolesville Day! The National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) is only part of this extravaganza. Route 107 (Fisher Ave is closed to traffic for more than a 1/2 mile south our event and is filled with 10-15,000 people enjoying all kinds of activities. We partner with the town and work as part of the Poolesville Day Committee. So, take a break for the NDEW activities and enjoy what’s around you. At the far end is the Classic Car Show and right next store, Bassett’s is doing a lot to help us continue to have fun well into the night. So have fun, be responsible :). You have the best parking spot for the biggest event of the year.

One Day Until Our 2017 National Drive Electric Week Poolesville Day Event

Only one more day until our 2017 National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) Poolesville Day Event and it looks like we are in line for another record breaking event! We hope you are coming! Largest NDEW event on the east coast, 3rd largest worldwide (out of 286 events).

Note to Media and Vendors: Please contact for at the event parking.

 

We have over 120 Electric and Plugin Electric Hybrid Vehicles (EV/PHEV) signed up to come out and enjoy the day.  This is mostly EV owners volunteering their time to help educate the public about what it is like to really own an Electric or Plugin Electric Hybrid Vehicle.  There will also be manufacturers and dealerships from Tesla, Ford, Nissan, Chevy, VW, BMW and more.  Patrons will be able to test drive or ride many of these.

Learn what the real facts and what are the myths about EVs. See the different makes and models and what are the advantages and disadvantages of both.  Also, the Classic Car Show returns this year and will be co-located with the  National Drive Electric Week show.  Partnering with the Town of Poolesville, this event is on Poolesville Day. The town is closed to all but foot traffic. Vendors line the street, music fills your ears and the smell of wonderful food fills the air. There will be farm animals, old time tractors (and steam engines at the car show), climbing walls and all kinds of entertainment. Oh, and the day starts at 10 am with a great parade. These events bring in 10,000 to 15,000 people. Don’t forget to get your photo with a Star Wars Stormtooper from the 501st or other hero Cosplayer at the NDEW event.

2016 National Drive Electric Week Poolesville Day event a Success!

The 2016 National Drive Electric Week – Poolesville Day event was a resounding success!

The final registered electric vehicle count was 91 vehicles, 22 Models. We had a few cars not show up and a few that showed up, but never registered. The final count made this the largest National Drive Electric Week event on the east coast and the 5th largest event worldwide. Photo by Terri PittsThat is 5th out of the 235 events registered. Not bad for a small town in Maryland. We are still waiting on the final people count from the Town of Poolesville, but we expect it to be well over 10,000 people. We started organizing our event shortly after our 2015 event completed. In 2015 we had just over 40 vehicles, so this year, we more than doubled that. And, yes, we have already started planning for 2017.

It was an amazing record-making event. Electric vehicle owners came from all over the area and a number of dealerships participated and supported our event.

For some of the Virginia resident vehicle owners, the day started early with a MD Volt Meetup and ferry crossing to get some great photo ops as they crossed the Potomac River on the Civil War era White’s Ferry car transport. It was quite a site, seeing the historic White’s Ferry loaded with modern electric vehicles.

terri-pitts-img_5046For the rest of Poolesville, the day started with a parade, which included a few of the electric cars, two all-electric motorcycles and two Star Wars Stormtroopers from the Old Line Garrison, the Maryland chapter of the worldwide 501st Legion. The Tesla Model X in the parade was driven and owned by local physician, Dr. Amar Duggirala, of Poolesville Family Practice. Another parade participant, a new KIA Soul EV was brought by Jim Alvis, Manager at Government Affairs for KIA Motors America Corporation, Washington Office.

KIA Motors America put on a first class operation. They brought 3 of the all new Electric KIA Souls. They provided more than 30 demo drives and rides and gave out a variety of KIA goodies that helped to entice people to give the Soul a look and a test drive. Their energetic team of people was a welcome addition to our event.

  

BMW of Rockville, back for another year, brought their i3 and the crowd-pleasing i8. People loved the very sporty look of the i8 with its swan or butterfly doors that open upwards and outwards. And the i3 with its equally unique doors and look drew a lot of attention as well. Next year we hope to feature the i8 as one of the parade cars.

Sheehy Ford of Gaithersburg, who has attended our event for a number of years, brought the new Ford Fusion Energi (a plug-in electric hybrid) and the all-electric Ford Focus. To the delight of the audience, Sheehy Ford of Gaithersburg‘s Mike Engelmann demonstrated hands free, the self-parking ability of the Ford Fusion Energi.

King Volkswagen of Gaithersburg, a first-time participant at our event, brought a beautiful 2016 Volkswagen e-Golf.

DARCARS Nissan Rockville brought their well known and respected LEAF. Nissan is one of the National sponsors of the National Drive Electric Week and we were delighted to have DARCARS of Rockville represent Nissan.

We had 6 Zero Motorcycles, some were proud owners, but a number were from Cyclemax in Gaithersburg. Cyclemax also brought a display tent, their expertise and information on the Zeros.
  

Loved seeing the wide variety of vehicles, from the Chevy Volts to Nissan LEAFs to Honda Fit to Zero Motorcycles. But the unusual is always a cool draw, like the little “Smart fortwo electric drive” and the self made electric conversions, like the “E-Pacer”.
 

But for this author, my true love is the Ford Fusion Energi (I think it is one of the best-looking plug-ins out there, Okay, I may be bias, I own one), and the Tesla Model X (my ultimate dream car).
I loved seeing all of the amazing Teslas at our event. We had 2 Tesla Roadsters, 14 of the Tesla Model S and 7 of the show-stopping Model X. A number of the owners provided demo drives and rides.

Tesla owners attending our National Drive Electric Week Poolesville Day event showed off their stuff. The ludicrous 0-60 in 2.5 second Tesla Model S to the Falcon Wing doors of the Model X are always a big hit at any car show. And all of the added accessories.

We had a visit by honest Abe and the Washington National’s George Washington. George seems to have a real head for electric cars.

We also loved having a couple members of the Old Line Garrison, the Maryland chapter of the worldwide 501st Legion. They represented their Garrison well and provided wonderful photo opportunities for car owners and show attendees alike. We would love to see them and their Rebel counterparts back next year, maybe in a larger force. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see 30 or more Star Wars StormTroopers marching in the parade?!

  

 

 

This year, Genovation Cars Inc. co-founder Andrew Saul, CEO, came with his Tesla Model S and talked to people about the company’s High-Performance All-Electric Corvette, the GXE. This is the car that made The Kessel Run in 12 parsecs…no wait that’s Star Wars… the GXE broke the EV speed record for a production electric car. It hit 205.6 mph, breaking their own world land speed record at NASA’s Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, Kennedy Space Center-Shuttle Landing Facility shuttle runway. A record that is sure to be broken again by the GXE before long. Andrew plans to bring the GXE Corvette to our 2017 event. We hope to include it in the parade.

Next year we hope to again use the parking areas of Anytime Fitness Poolesville and that of the Bassett’s Fine Food & Spirits. This area proved to be a great location and will allow us to continue to expand and remain a major part of the Town of Poolesville and Poolesville Day.

*** Press Release *** We did it! #1 on East Coast

Well this will be AWESOME!

On Poolesville Day at the National Drive Electric Week car show, event located across from Bassett’s Fine Food & Spirits, will be over 80 (81 and counting) #EV#PHEV vehicles that you can look at, talk to the owners of and to dealerships and even some that you can test drive or ride!

We will have over 22 models from BMWs, Teslas, Kia Motors America,Chevy‘s, Ford Motor Companys, Nissans to Zero Motorcycles and more.

We have more registered vehicles than any other #NDEW2016 event on the east coast and currently rank 5th worldwide (out of 240 NDEW events). That is BIG! And it is here in the Town of Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland on Sept 17 from 10am – 4pm!

Dealerships like BMW of Rockville, Sheehy Ford Lincoln of Gaithersburg.DARCARS Nissan Rockville, Cyclemax, King Volkswagen and Kia Motors America will be there.

Oh, did I mention that a few members of the Old Line Garrison, 501st Legion will also be there!

*** Press Release *** NDEW – Poolesville 2016 – 2nd Largest on the East Coast

Alpharetta, Georgia passed Poolesville to take 1st place on the East Coast with 73 registered cars. Congrats!. Their very successful event was held on Sept 10th. Poolesville has 72 vehicles registered and still counting. Poolesville is on track for being the largest National Drive Electric Week on the east coast. We have more than 70 Plug-In Electric Vehicles (20 Models) already signed up and expecting more than 10,000 people to attend.

Poolesville is on track for being the largest National Drive Electric Week on the east coast. We have more than 60 Plug-In Electric Vehicles already signed up and expecting more than 10,000 people to attend.
